Backspacer is the ninth album by Pearl Jam. The album was released on September 20, 2009 by Monkeywrench Records and counting with the production of producer long known by the band, Brendan O' Brien. The album is the primacy of positivism, but also realism, on the band's career, being the shortest Pearl Jam album to date.

Backspacer is the consolidation of the new ideology that was built since the years of 2000, breaking with the predominant called dark side of Pearl Jam songs. Very positive, realistic, addressing themes of dreams, future, life, death and peace of mind, Backspacer introduces a late 70's - mid 80's style into the album, also recurring to some pop style. This New Wave way gave a pretty much different look into the album compared to the whole discography.

Poetically, Backspacer can be opposite to maybe all the other albums of Pearl Jam discography. Against Ten and Vs.Backspacer is a lighter, positive and enthusiastic album than the others. About VitalogyNo Code and Yield, this new record is also a break with everything went previously, but instead of singing escapism and exile, 2009's album encouraged the contact with good things on the world in peaceful and beautiful vision of harmony. Backspacer was a little closer to Binaural and Riot Act  since its themes present love as higher salvation and the power of conscience and friendship, but is a softer and less angry vision of the world. The vision on this album is to grow old happy, dynamically mingled with friends, love and family, because everything will end and loving the other one is the only thing that matters. To Backspace is to erase what was wrong and start again in the right way.
