No Code is the fourth album by Pearl Jam released on August 27, 1996. This is the second album of what is called the Vitalogy era, one of the most important phases of the band's life, when Pearl Jam started a strict privacy policy with mainstream media and even fans. More experimental, artistic, and eclectic than the previous one, Vitalogy, No Code gave further to the pratics Pearl Jam decided to use to reserve their own images and only spread art.

Background[]

The album was produced under certain tension between band members, but in the end was a necessary and productive experience. Little problems between creative process, mostly under Eddie Vedder's control, even led Jeff Ament into stress, early leaving the band. In fact, all members were tired and stresses with all the pressure of mainstream media, feeling the early consequences of the exile and touring began very stressful.

Poetically, No Code sounds like an experimental and ecletic album, something that had some appearance on Vitalogy. The previous album presented some different kind of musical style, but No Code went farther, a face that was unknown of the band until that time. The album was developed in a background of self-analysis and physically impersonal contribution, but very introspective lyrics, composing a simple work talking about simple, yet important and necessary, subjects of life. But of course fame, emotional instability, isolated perspective of the world, escapism, complicated love and deep self-examination weren't out of the album, but all of them analysed in a simple look giving the album an easy and peaceful listening feature.

Trivia[]

  • The album is said to be called No Code for some reasons. The most possible, even Vedder once explained that it's also a reference to the medical terminology of Do Not Ressucitate if the album was a failure, is that the album is the code itself. Many tiny images of eyes, objects and even the band members form, together and with the full open folder, the Eye logo (resembling The Eye of Providence).
