"Wishlist" is the fifith song on Pearl Jam's fifith album, Yield.

Wishlist (1998)

The song's lyrics and music were written by Eddie Vedder and was released on May 5, 1998 as a single. Even being a simple song, "Wishlist" is widely liked by the fans, specially by its easy but yet powerful solo.

The songs is an easy and modest song that holds a lot of meaning. The main theme on the lyrics configure a list of wishes the protagonist desires from his deeper thoughts and feelings. Sometimes the lead figure wants to just disappear like a neutron bomb or a sacrifice, but still wants his counscience to be intact living even after death. The protagonist also wishes to be a special object the loved one can carry everywhere, or maybe be the main feature of a Christmas tree.

The main character wishes many sentimental events and personalities to become, most of them involving joy and love. Desiring to be a sailor with a trusted love waiting for him, the reasons and millions of people with hands up in the sky, the protagonist also gives a clear message: he is happy, and want to be always happy as he still is.

He keeps wishing to be a messenger who spread only good news, a reflex of the moon on his lover's car, a lonely alien living behind the sun, an object that his lover depends and the verb to trust itself and never let his love down.

In the end, wishing also to be any song on the radio, but the one his lover turned on, he realizes the wishlist is in fact infinite and he will always want to be happy or near people he loves, no matter what he can become.

I wish I was a neutron bomb

For once I could go off

I wish I was a sacrifice

But somehow still lived on

I wish I was a sentimental

Ornament you hung on

The Christmas tree, I wish I was

The star that went on top

I wish I was the evidence

I wish I was the grounds

For fifty million hands up raised

And opened toward the sky

I wish I was a sailor with

Someone who waited for me

I wish I was as fortunate

As fortunate as me

I wish I was a messenger

And all the news was good

I wish I was the full moon shining

Off a camaro's hood

I wish I was an alien

At home behind the sun

I wish I was the souvenir

You kept your house key on

I wish I was the pedal break

That you depended on

I wish I was the word to trust

And never let you down

I wish I was the radio song

The one that you turned up

I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish

I wish it never stops
